On July 27, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that homosexual and bisexual men limit, “for the time being”, the number of sexual partners to protect themselves from monkeypox and help delay the transmission of the virus. rapid spread.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who on July 23 declared monkeypox a global health emergency, told reporters that since the outbreaks began in May, 98 percent of detected cases have been in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
In addition, he warned against the stigma around the disease, which could deter infected people from seeking treatment. In this regard, he said that it is crucial that public health authorities engage communities of men who have sex with men to reduce the transmission of the virus and care for those infected while protecting human rights by combating discrimination:
Stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus and can fuel the outbreak.
However, the WHO has emphasized that monkeypox can infect anyone who is in regular skin-to-skin contact with a patient and also through droplets or touching contaminated bedding or towels in a home setting. In addition, the international health organization warned that the disease could be more serious in vulnerable populations such as children or pregnant women.
According to the director general of the WHO, so far, there have been reports of five deaths attributed to the outbreak. More than 18,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in 78 countries, 70 percent of the cases correspond to Europe and 25 percent to the American continent.
In the particular case of Latin America, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports 5,284 confirmed cases of monkeypox in 18 countries, of which 99 percent are men and 98 percent are men who have sex with other men. .
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the countries with the highest number of monkeypox cases are: Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica , Ecuador and Panama.
