South Africa considers women to have multiple husbands

South Africa is surprising the world with a bill that seeks to legalize polyandry, the ability of a woman to have more than one husband at the same time, without reprisals or any problem. This type of union would be allowed throughout the country and would open the door to the much-questioned polyamory.

This project divided the population and the internet, as conservative groups brand the practice as a lack of commitment, love and respect. While the rest see this as a romantic agreement that requires more commitment.

Polyamory has been a topic of discussion for the last few years. For example, in Europe it is considered a practice with a lack of morality that alters the idea of having a conservative and usual family in which there is only one mother and one father or two fathers or mothers. Interestingly, in Africa it is being decided to make polyamory something common, in which the commitment of three or more people is the strength of their union.

In addition, on this continent it is considered a matter of justice and equality, since polygamy, in which a man can be married to several women, is legal. Therefore, now it is sought that polyandry is also.

It should be remembered that polygamy is a practice that extends throughout much of the world. In total there are 48 countries that legally accept it and, for the most part, these belong to the African continent or the Muslim world, not a Western culture. Meanwhile, polyandry is less prevalent, as it only takes place in places with a small female population, such as the Yunnan and Sichuan regions of China.

Although the approval of polyandry would equalize the rights of African women, there are conservative groups that already speak out against it. However, Charlene May, an advocate for the Women’s Legal Center, a law firm that fights for women’s rights, believes that the state can no longer ignore this situation.

We cannot reject legal reform because it challenges certain patriarchal views in our society.

His comment comes from the fact that polyandry has been practiced for some years, but it is often done in secret due to social harassment and possible reprisals. However, it is something that has existed within African society for years.
